ENH 222: Survey of English Literature Since 1800
Welcome!

Hello, I am your instructor Rod Freeman and I hope you find this course meaningful. The purpose of a Survey Course in literature is to provide a representative foundation--a sampler of influential authors and to understand the literary tradition upon which subsequent literature builds upon, makes allusion to, or reacts against.
Please familiarize yourself with Blackboard prior to the beginning of the class. Two texts are used for assignments, discussion and examinations in the course:
Greenblatt, Stephen, W.H. Abrams et. al. Eds. The Norton Anthology of English Literature. Volume 2. 8th ed. New York: Norton, 2006.
--and--

Shelly, Mary. Frankenstein: The 1818 Text. Contexts, Nineteenth-Century Responses, Modern Criticism. J. Paul Hunter, ed. Norton Critical Edition. New York: Norton, 1996.

By all means begin your readings early! I suggest beginning with The Norton Anthology pages 1-23 The Romantic Period 1785-1830 and of course begin reading Mary Shelleys Frankenstein which we will read in its entirety several weeks into the course. You should also visit the Norton publishing website For supporting materials in English Literature:
