International Class
Resource Proposal:
"Ba Fa Ba Fa"
Judi Shelkin
Curriculum Support for Current
Classes:
I have used a cross-culture simulation game
called "Ba Fa Ba Fa" for ten years as a curriculum support
activity for Communication 100 and Communication 110. In addition
to using this cross cultural simulation game for the communication
classes, I have been asked to conduct the activities in other classes.
This game is in need of replacement due to pieces
being used up over a period of time. I have been unable to conduct
this activity in other classes at the request of other instructors.
Objective:
"Ba Fa Ba Fa" is a three hour cross-cultural
simulation where students have the opportunity to become members
of one of two completely opposite cultures. Students must learn
the new language, rules and roles of their new culture. All students
have the opportunity to observe and interact with strangers from
a new culture. At the end of the activitiy students walk away with
real empathy, the ability to stand in someone elses shoes and feel
what they are feeling.
Outcomes:
I have found "Ba Fa Ba Fa" to be one
of the best learning resources for teaching international education.
Without access to this resource, I feel that we are providing a
disservice to students at Estrella Mountain Community College
Cost:
approximately $250.00
